Mental health and wellbeing in higher education institutions

Project location(s): Kenyatta University, Chuka University, Tharaka University and Embu University

Project Overview

The project seeks to develop core mental health support services in Kenyan universities. These students face a myriad of stressors including coming from extremely poor communities, being forced to adjust to life away from the care of their parents/guardians, in addition to this, the pressure for them to achieve is immense. By offering mental health support services we aim to educate, support and increase access to treatment for students who are vulnerable and at risk of developing mental health conditions.

The program focuses on establishing or strengthening mental health and psychosocial support and wellness services in the universities with the goal of:

  • Increasing access to treatment including clinical and low intensity psychosocial therapies.
  • Improving level of awareness on mental health, and behaviour and attitudes towards wellness.
  • Enhancing and accessible peer support services.
  • Ensuring stigma-free services within campus.
  • Using technology to leverage change.
