Mental health and wellbeing in higher education institutions

Project location(s): Kenyatta University (Kiambu County) and Chuka University (Tharaka Nithi County)

Project Overview

The project seeks to develop core mental health support services in Kenyan universities, with the initial phase of the program being implemented in Kenyatta and Chuka Universities. Many of these students have come from extremely poor communities, and the pressure for them to achieve is immense. By offering mental health support services we aim to educate, support and increase access to treatment for students who are vulnerable and at risk of developing mental health conditions.

We will establish mental health support and wellness services in Kenyatta University in central Kenya and Chuka University in Eastern Kenya. The two universities have been selected because of their high student intakes and, as public universities, and the lower economic status of the student populations. The two universities have student populations of over 70,000 and 16,000 respectively.

The project’s intended outcomes

  • Increased access to treatment including clinical and low intensity psychosocial therapies.
  • Improved level of awareness on mental health, and behaviour and attitudes towards wellness.
  • Enhances and accessible peer support services.
  • Stigma-free services within campus.
  • Use of technology to leverage change.
